Hi Sabine, To the best of my knowledge you can only make requests via WMS using Boxes.
Remember that the resulting image has to be a square, so if you were to send a non-box polygon, it would simply act as a cartographic mask, and you'd have lots of black (or white) surrounding the desired area. I guess if you *really* wanted a polygon to mask your map, you could maybe do something with WPS, but I've not used that myself so I don't know exactly how feasible or workable it would be. Maybe others here can offer suggestions if that's a way you want to go.
