I did. Read again. (I also needed to add -DGL_GLEXT_LEGACY to compile
fgl_glxgears)
But the result isn't very good. I have the following behaviour
consistently: boot system, X starts fine, I close X on purpose, second
time X doesn't start, receives signal 11, third time on starting X my
system hangs badly and I have to press the power button for 4 secs.

Also, I'm worried that 8-12 does not bring a glx module, so the one
from mesa is used.
Is this ok?

The same thing happens when I install back the 8.552 or 8.552-r1
ebuild. So far, the 8.543 are the only ones fully working for me.

Well, because if I don't want to put ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" in
make.conf, which I'm not too keen on doing (because it affects the
whole system), the only way I see it can be done is adding a lot of
packages to package.keywords:
x11-base/xorg-server ~amd64, etc, etc, etc, etc.

I started doing it, but gave up when the list grew a bit too large.

I am disapointed by this, because xorg-server has been upgraded to
1.4.2 on FreeBSD for a very long time.

What is your way of doing it (using xorg-server-1.5.*) ?

And aren't you also using 8-12? Is it working fine for you?
What about glx, is the one from mesa also loaded in your case?
