8-12 (that is, release 8.561, that is, version 8.564) worked!
A bit more unstable I got a crash after restarting the server.

Effectively, I didn't need anything more than picking the 8.552 ebuild
(which does not need Xserver 1.5), changing the source file name from
8-11 to 8-12, rebuilding the manifest and emerging.

Perhaps it's better to wait for someone more experienced with Linux to
send the ebuild.
Those who are eager to try 8-12 can follow the same steps.
