Those are all eSATA, right? I know you dislike external USB, but do you have 
one to try? According to Wiki, eSATA has stricter technical requirements. Is 
the eSata on your computer a ”proper” port or just an internal one routed 
through an I/O slot?

SATA connectors are not made for many plugging cycles, maybe 50 or so. USB, 
OTOH, is specced for thousands of cycles. Perhaps the connector is worn out, 
especially if it is your “favorite” enclosure.

There are bare connectors without any case at all. For a quick-n-dirty 
drive hook-up, it might be enough. It’s just a little box with the connect 
at one end, a USB cable at the other and a power socket for an external 
power brick.
