Don't know if I'm answering my own question but.... In fiddling around I saw that the audio output, Audio -> Audio Device, was set to something that it shouldn't be. I changed it to the proper device and it now works. Having said that, now if I close vlc then restart, it's back to the original, wrong, device and hence, no sound. Also if it is set correctly and I then select the Audio menu, it loses the correct audio device, and the sound. As typing this, it occurred to me that in this case and my original question, that it is user interface actions that cause the loss of sound. Maybe there are still problems with the qt5 integration?
