In the /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions directory there should be a file called fluxbox. If you 
edit that you can
insert programs that you want started at boot. For example:

xscreensaver &
gkrellm2 -w $
exec fluxbox

Just be sure that the fluxbox line is the last line in the file. 

This is the way I do it. I don't really use .xsession at all. Maybe this won't do what 
you want. Just a
thought.
