do you have a separate /tmp partition? if so, chmod 1777 /tmp, otherwise normal users can't write files there (something which has bugged me for a long time, and is still a problem in the gentoo install)

Have you filed a bug @ bugs.gentoo.org?

I believe i have done this a while ago, but i'd have to check

Why does this happen for you? Surely if you have /tmp mounted when you untar the install stage you use, it will get the correct permissions?

Actually, it doesn't. In the install files, there's a /tmp directory with the correct permissions, but afaik it doesn't overwrite the existing one if something's mounted on it (with obvious reasons).
