I can't see the harm, and people who don't have the time, interest or social skills can certainly not join. I worked from a home office for 7 years and used this all the time. Sometimes it helps to realize that the people on the other end of the wire are just that: people. I've seen behaviors change among team members for the better. Plus, maybe I can learn how to pronouce more than half of your names. :)
