I just added three new Incubator Field Guides to the Mentors section of the
Incubator wiki:
• Initial Committer Selection [1]
• Naming and Trademarks [2]
• When a Project Is Not Ready for Incubation [3]
These guides offer practical, experience-based advice for mentors, PPMCs, and
IPMC members.
To create these Field Guides, I reviewed and analysed real discussion threads
from the incubator mailing list over the past five years with some help from
AI. Here’s how I approached it:
• I looked for recurring patterns and unusual cases that come up during
proposals, reviews, and incubation,
• then distilled the main points from those discussions into general
guidance,
• and made sure to anonymise and generalise the outcomes, leaving out any
project names.
The goal is to capture the Incubator’s collective experience in a way others
can use.
You might find these Field Guides helpful when:
• something “feels familiar” but is hard to articulate,
• a discussion starts circling known issues,
• mentors or reviewers need shared language to explain concerns,
• a project is encountering a recurring governance situation.
These are just guides and are meant to support, not replace, existing ASF and
Incubator policies.
I welcome any feedback, especially if you see other recurring topics where a
Field Guide could help. I’m also working on a few more guides. If anyone is
interested in the Python code I used to help generate this, ask.
