As an avid lurker, I'd echo this sentiment.  Much of the listserve traffic may 
be over my head, but it always presents opportunities to dig more into the guts 
of GDAL and recognize issues in my own code that I didn't realize I had.

My concern about a gdal-users list would be just what Frank mentions - namely 
that developers may not be as involved on such a list.  I'm always floored by 
how patient the developers of GDAL are and how very few threads go unaddressed. 
 Selfishly, I wouldn't want that resource split up.
