I also think that 2.14 is not uncommon. RHEL-3 is also affected. If this is fixed, I'll continue my efforts to evaluate gcc-4.0 (and report more bugs - there seems to be an unrelated bad code bug that I cannot analyze before this PR gets fixed). By the way, libstdc++.a looks OK. This means that "g++ -static" works fine (verified on my tO3.cpp example, and on the streambuf example referenced in comment 2) -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18054
