I just tried to compile the attached code with flag -O3 on trunk dated
20140402 and it couldn't compile in five minutes on an otherwise idle
3.5GHz AMD Phenom.

Of the approx 249,000 compilations required to compile a recent Fredora
Linux distribution, this one compilation took the longest.
