For the record, I'm still a little uncomfortable with this.
It feels too much like a hack to me.  Eric knows this stuff
much better than I do though, so if he's happy, I'll cede to him.

It was fine on mips64-linux-gnu (including 32-bit multilibs)
when I tested it originally, so a thumbs up from that point of view.
