I am attaching the resulting patch for revision 183181. Could it be tested on
the platforms for which revision 181405 caused some failures: i.e., AIX
(comment #12, tested without regression on Darwin), mips-linux-gnu (comment
#18), and SH target when compiling for big endian (comment #19).
