There must be a simpler way to fix this regression. I am not even convinced that this change would fix this particular bug anyway, so we first need this info before proceeding. Such major addition is not suitable for stage 3 in my opinion (but very welcome for stage 1), we want a much more localized change, which is certainly possible here.
