Not to confuse things, but I've used a much smaller VDI (200MB) on
VirtualBox to install "plain DOS" with FreeDOS 1.3 RC5, and that
worked fine. ("Plain DOS" takes only 20MB on the hard drive, so I
didn't need a very big virtual disk.)

I set it as "fixed size" so it creates the full VirtualBox Disk Image
("VDI") right away .. because 200MB or even 500MB is not that big
these days. Creating a 500MB VDI took less than a second to do during
my video:
