Not internally.  There were separate CVSMBF/CVDMBF and MKSMBF$/MKDMBF$ to 
do the conversions, and a switch /MBF to use them as the default 
CVS/CVD/MKS$/MKD$, but they weren't the default formats of QBASIC.

Their only real use was database files (opened for RANDOM).  Everywhere 
else, the internal format didn't really even matter.
