2039 was part of the UNSTABLE series, along with 2035 and 2037 and had
a lot of experimental features, but also had the unstable tag for a
reason ;-)

2040 seems to be based on the stable series and I suppose that the
idea is to have a solid kernel base and then carefully backport
features as needed.

As the author of NLSFUNC, I don't think it should be a priority now.
Most of the job can be done with MODE commands.
