I get any more A20 BIOS method lockup reports, I might sneak in an order
change for testing A20 control in HIMEM source before FD 1.0, place it
after FAST, PS2, and KBC. The bad news is that what is in there was the
best tested order when we collected all the testers on the list we could
and had them report results over a couple weeks of testing different
ordering. Plus, the rationale was that BIOS should know better than
anything else how to control A20 on its own machine. Makes sense, right?

Now it looks like method BIOS should be almost last line to work with a
couple user environments (which probably translates to a large percentage
in the real world). But if I do that, I'm sure I'll get other people
reporting failure because of the new A20 test order. For example,
unexpected port hits on some machines are reported to cause misbehavior,
although perhaps those stories are apocryphal. You can't win.

But boy am I tempted to shift the order if it means fewer reported startup
failures. Maybe I'll do it. Go on, dare me.
