>> could be DOSLFN included? I think that most people needs the driver! I would prefer a FreeDOS which works stable. Please remember that we once planned to call FreeDOS 1.0 when we have all MS DOS 3.3x features. Now I hear lots of "please let us add this or that MS DOS 7.10 feature in the last week before 1.0". And actually FreeCOM 0.84 is not exactly stable at the moment. I would recommend to include 0.82pl3 as a fallback. Talking about drivers, how about adding a menu option to the installer (ONE menu option for all questions), to let the user select whether he wants DISPLAY, SHARE and DOSLFN? Each of them eats 10kb RAM and only has little use for many users. First is for "non-western" fonts (several Western Europe countries can live with BIOS fonts, CP 858 is only minimal extra for them, and US/UK users do not need non-ASCII at all). Second is for Windows compatibility (needed to be able to open DOS boxes without crashing). Third is for long file names (only needed if you are actually going to use such on your DOS disk). So the suggested menu option would be something like "shall I write the config sys in a way which uses 30k extra RAM for some advanced features (font loader, SHARE, long file names) Yes/No?". If the user answers no, then those things would still be there but would be commented out. Alternatively, one of the boot options could load those. Probably one which also loads EMM386 with NOEMS option ;-). Oh... And one which does not load XDMA, as that one is not compatible with Windows DMA/IRQ handling.
