BTW, do you see the excerpts from MS HELP about EMM386? There sayed,
that it offers option MIN=, which forces to allocate given amount of XMS to
EMS/VCPI, and it allows to point memory amount, to which (from MIN) its poll
will grow when applications requests memory (and reduced up to MIN, when
application frees the memory). Probably, EMM386 implements this through XMS
memory block reallocation (XMS function 0Fh).

Let me remind: "256K" is a default value for MIN= option. Requests over
this amount should grow total EMS/VCPI memory by allocationg memory from
XMS.
