Dear Frameworkers,

To those of you in the New York City area, just a reminder that experimental
and animated works preserved by the Women’s Film Preservation Fund will be
screening in a mini-series this Friday and Saturday nights, June 21st and 22nd
at Anthology Film Archives.

I’m including a brief summary of the 3 varied programs below and I would
especially like to point out Program 3 which includes rarely screened, unedited
footage by two separate filmmakers, Marie Menken and Helen Hill. It is easy to
overlook this program because it is later screening on Saturday night, but
Menken’s views of the monastery set against the stark mountains in the village
of Gaudix in Spain and excerpts from Hill’s “Home Movies” footage of New
Orleans from an insider’s point of view, make this a screening not to be missed.

Hope you can make one or more of the screenings,

Ann

SELECTED EXPERIMENTAL AND ANIMATED WORKS FROM THE WOMEN’S FILM PRESERVATION FUND

Friday and Saturday, June 21-22

Anthology Film Archives

32 Second Avenune at 2nd Street

New York City

Since 1996 the Women’s Film Preservation Fund has preserved a number of
significant experimental and animated works by American women, many of which
reflect pioneering approaches and unique voices. These include works by Storm
de Hirsch, Barbara Hammer, Peggy Ahwesh, Bette Gordon, and Helen Hill among
others.

The filmmakers approach their films from many directions and a range of
sub-genres within experimental film and animation that include structuralist
cinema, surreal films, experimental documentaries, improvised comedies,
feminist films, and unedited footage. They utilize optical printing, stop
action and hand-drawn animation, hand-altered negatives, as well as live action
and documentary footage. A selection of these works is featured in three
programs and includes a number of films preserved in collaboration with
Anthology Film Archives. Sheila Paige and Lisa Crafts will be appearing in
person.

June 21st 7:30 pm

Program 1: Expanding Notions of Time, Space, and Reality includes films by
Storm de Hirsch, Barbara Hammer, Maya Deren, Anita Thacher, Jane Aaron, and
Bette Gordon that have manipulated time, space, and/or motion to give us a
broader view of reality.

June 22nd

Program 2: Refelections, Dreams, and Experiments focuses on changing views on
womanhood and represents a diverse group of women makers with varied
perspectives and filmmaking techniques: Faith Hubley, Peggy Ahwesh, Sheila
Paige, Barbara Hammer, and Lisa Crafts.

Program 3: Marie Menken and Helen Hill: Camera Rolls. This program festures
unedited footage by two distinctive filmmakers: Marie Menken’s THE GRAVEDIGGERS
FROM GAUDIX, shows the lives and routines of monks in the monastery who bury
the local dead in this town set against the striking, arid mountains of Gaudix
in the south of Spain; and HELEN HILL’S HOME MOVIES shows a portion of the
footage that the animator shot of scenes of unique New Orleans celebrations and
of her flood damaged neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina. The unedited
footage by both of these filmmakers provides insight into the filmmakers’
processes and is rarely screened.

Tickets: $12 general; $9 for students, seniors, & children (12 & under); $7
Anthology, NYWIFT, and NYFVC members
