Hi All,

I have a Thinkpad T500 with an AES2810 scanner. I looked around on this
list and found out that it is not supported since a long time, because it is
hard (and costly :-) for the developers to get a laptop equipped with this
scanner.

I would suggest an other approach, which is cheap, but needs some skills:

1.) lets get a fingerprint sensor board for T500 (or T400) from e-bay
(search for part # 42W7853 ) which cost just 20$ + posting

2.) Find out which are the power supply and USB communication pins on the 4
pin external connector of the fingerprint board.

3.) solder the 4 pin connector on the back of the fingerprint board to an
USB cable

4.) connect it to any external USB port of a PC and start debugging! :D

I'm an electrical engineer, but I don't have any experience with fingerprint
readers. So I just suppose that this method should work, but I'm not 100%
sure.

Could anybody confirm that the built-in scanners are fully USB compatible?
(I think Yes, because it would be quite a burden for the notebook
manufacturers to develop a new protocol just for fingerprint readers. And
also they are listed as USB devices when I run the lsusb command.)

If some authentic :-) person could confirm that this approach would possibly
work, than I will buy the sensor and let it be posted to one of the
developers, who could solder the USB cable to the board and could debug the
USB communication.

Sincerely yours,
Andras
