I dont quite understand... You are not supposed to (dis-)connect to the synth to turn sounds on/off. You should rather send MIDI NoteOn/Off events.
And for volume control, you should use MIDI CC 7 or CC 11. Why are you using nine synth instances rather than a single synth and making each sound play on a dedicated MIDI channel?
