.odt
file properties shows: Mime-type:
application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text

I
tried to associate this file type with libreoffice-writer. But as I
said before after closing the dialogue it resets itself to text
editor “leafpad”.

I
opened the default list as you said. I changed manually
leafpad.desktop to writer.desktop. I saved the file, reopened the
file manger, double clicked the .odt file and again it opened in
leafpad.

I
reopened the default list document and my changes gone, the system
reset itself to leafpad text editor again.

This
is defaults list:

[Default
Applications]
application/vnd.fuzzysheet=writer.desktop
image/png=ristretto.desktop
application/x-theme=leafpad.desktop
image/gif=ristretto.desktop
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.template=writer.desktop

image/tiff=ristretto.desktop
application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text=leafpad.desktop
text/plain=leafpad.desktop
x-scheme-handler/file=writer.desktop
application/x-xcf=gimp.desktop
application/pdf=evince.desktop
image/jpeg=ristretto.desktop
image/x-xcf=gimp.desktop

weird. efm uses the FDO config for this and will even modify it too:

~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list

that file lists mimetypes and the associated tool - can you check what this
says and see that after you changed it in the gui OR used open with... etc.
that it was changed to have the mimetype of the given file list the app next to
it?
