Thanks a lot. 

This doesn't work with libreoffice odt. I managed to associate files with other 
applications, like xfc with gimp and so on and so forth. 
But when I associate libreoffice document with libreoffice writer the program 
resets itself to plain text editor after closing the setting dialogue. It must 
be a bug.

You can select the default application per file type in the "Default
Applications" menu.
Go to: Menu -> Settings -> Settings Panel -> Apps -> Default Applications
or quicker: Everything(Alt+Esc) -> "Default Applications"
