Have you tried easy_e17 script? I suggest you to nuke your install dir again, but this time, do a 'make distclean' instead of 'make uninstall', then check E's wiki for are the pre-requisits (maybe you are missing a dev lib and you didn't noticed?) and finally, try easy_e17 script.
