what he said. everything arguing over root is legacy. it is not something de's
WANT to support. i made the move years ago with e17. you cant catch such
rendering as rendering to root is destructive and produces just final output.
the way drawing works in things like x11, or windows and other os's is
destructive. you can't catch things and manage/layer them. the way this is dome
is either via creating actual windows that then have transparency of their own
- root-wail doesnt do this. conky does. OR the system provides a much higher
level way of placing content there that runs within the context of whatever is
managing the desktop - like widgets (html/javascript things) or in e17's case -
modules. the fact is that root-tail is "rude" in that it just scribbles over a
window it doesnt own, and its a hack that has long since seen its time end. if
you want to use such tools you can go back in time and use fvwm or twm and use
all the tools of that era, but everyone else has moved on. :)

The modern datacenter depends on network connectivity to access resources
and provide services. The best practices for maximizing a physical server's
connectivity to a physical network are well understood - see how these
rules translate into the virtual world?
