I told you that the result could be ugly. I had used something like your 
command in around 2005 with e17. I couldn't recall why I abandoned it :)

If I am not wrong, most DE's are moving towards E17-like root window. 
KDE already has since KDE4, gnome-3 will also be like that, not sure 
about xfce (haven't used it in over 5yrs). I suspect programs like 
root-tail which draw on the X root window will be quite non-functional 
in most major DE's in another year or so.

As for your solution, conky is definitely the way to go. Or, if you 
don't want conky, just run tail -f in a terminal,- make it transparent 
(either fake or true), sticky, and "Pin to desktop". You will lose right 
click on desktop functionality over the area the terminal is being drawn.
