Yes, the places module is not good for a shelf. But on the desktop it looks 
and behaves far different from an icon.

 Most importantly it has a single click interface for *all* the actions you 
want to perform with your (un)mounted drive/partitions. And when there are no 
devices to show, it just disappears. Even clicks on a desktop are passed right 
through it to the desktop root. I can't imagine a more convenient module.
