I should have said that I use startx which in turn uses .xinitrc which 
starts entrance and that starts E

When it fails to work the monitors do nothing. It's as if someone had 
used them inthe last few seconds.

I update fairly frequently. Last update was today. Prior to that it was 
2 days ago.
