Thanks for the explanation.  I've forwarded the info to the Conky developers. 
  My problem is definitely tied to the enabling of composite in e16 - it works 
fine w/o composite, so I'm working thru the issue with the Conky people, in 
hopes they will add support for either of the two methods above.
