If I may ask, what version of E are you running? I've got 0.16.7, and
I don't have a .e16 directory. I have a .enlightenment directory. 

What you describe is exactly what I need, and core docs are few and
far between, particularly with regard to e16. So far I have no clue
how to specify a script to run at startup

<sigh> Somehow I seem to have lost the menu for the integrated help
applet, too. Although I expect once I get some time that will be a little
easier to track down.
