I will utlimately do that if I cant find any other fix.

I compared ldd output and the libs on my RH9 machine seem to be the
same as those on FC3.

It may be a font or Xorg vs. XFree86 thing.  In this case, it actually
may help illuminate things more if I figure this out.

Any pointers on which libs or facilities are responsible for the menu
text?  Its seems like the same problem that Alex V was talking about
for E17.
