On a similiar track,
I have created a session file called Xinit, which in turn runs
$HOME/.xinitrc.
I just put in my own .xinitrc file what I want to run.
I am also running GDM as my login manager, on Mandrake 9.2
Here is a copy of my /etc/X11/dm/Sessions/Xinit.desktop
{ copied from another .desktop file in same dir }
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Xinitrc
Comment=Default $HOME/.xinitrc
Exec=~/.xinitrc
Icon=
Type=Application
