I don't think it is something related to the window manager.
you said gnome has a menu item that immediately switches the wm, do you?
well, I think this involves in a sort of an X restart, so perhaps you
should invastigate about what exactly that menu item do.
if all it does is to run a command you could create a menu item in E
that does the same.
