The way I do it is to leave all the system default stuff alone and in my home directory I have a .Xsession file that launches enlightenment, xscreensaver and xmodmap for me.

You could do the same thing with any other WM.

Not sure how you would make a proper GNOME + enlightenment setup this way. Maybe launch the GNOME pannel from .Xsession befor or after you launch e .
