I disagree with Scott; setting a reserve will prevent you from having to sell for a price below your pain threshhold. In those cases where I as a buyer did not meet the reserve - and having some info on the product you may have a hunch where it could be - but was the high bidder I was often contacted by the seller and asked if we can come to an agreement. I personally would not enter an item on ebay without setting a reserve, but then of course it's Scotts choice if he doesn't want to bid on my precious hula rings...
