My 2300 will not run without a dock either. I've taken it in to
shops who have said everything from it needs a new motherboard
to a touch of solder on the powermanager on the board. I've also
been told on this list that it is probably a fuse that needs
replaced. I haven't committed to any repairs as it just seemed
cheaper to get another 2300 (or better) when the whole thing
dies. For about 2 yrs, maybe 3 by now, I've had it permanently
connected to a minidock. Works fine and allows it to function
normally (with a tiny bit of added bulk) as a portable.

usually has a phone plug modem has instead another printer
port! now THAT is strange. >>

I used to have one of these European models. It came with an
adapter with the phone plug on one end and a "serial-like"
connector on the other. I guess Apple made different adapters for
each market, Europe requiring a variety of different phone
plugs. The modem inside was the same 14.4 as in most other
2300s. I've heard that the adapters are very hard to find. But
you can easily use the modem with a dock. I'd suggest, my best
friend, the minidock :)
