That should have been "functional" obviously, I really should get to bed
earlier! :)

I've tried UXA now, it runs very slowly without a composting manager and
barely at all with one, I'm using a 965GM.

...

I am getting getting frequent errors in the kernel log (this is likely
more to do with drm-intel-rawhide than your patch, however. But since
this is, thus far, the combination I've had the most success with I
think it's worth mentioning):

[drm:i915_gem_init_object] *ERROR* adding object 0 with offset
0x001084fd

[drm:drm_mmap_locked] *ERROR* looking for object at 0x000e4800

(and when running OpenGL)
[drm:i915_gem_execbuffer] *ERROR* Going to lose the write domain on obj
3 size 33554432

Despite these errors the Xserver seems stable and 3D does work, and as
previously mentioned so doesn sync to vblank.

...

All the above was with the git master xf86-video-intel driver, without
KMS. KMS fails to successfuly initialise the display, producing a
variation of the above "*ERROR adding object" error.

Meanwhile, the dri2 branch of xf86-video-intel fails to initialise.
