Yes, the driver in the freedesktop.org tree is *ancient*. That's why he said to try an updated driver from dri.sf.net. :)

anyhoo, that is the DRM DRIVER_DATE, most of the 3d work is done in the mesa driver, http://dri.freedesktop.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/mesa/Mesa/src/mesa/drivers/dri/i830/i830_context.c
