This will remain necessary until PCI GART is deemed stable with AGP
cards or there's a way to tell what kind of card it is.

While I don't agree to 'proof' and 'need', there would certainly be
benefits to keeping the radeon driver in sync between XFree86 and DRI
CVS. The question is how to deal with development in one tree which
depends on changes outside the driver. E.g., the radeon driver in the
XFree86 tree has support for message handling, which doesn't exist in
the DRI tree yet. Are there provisions for conditionally compiling
things like this? That would also be useful for building current drivers
against a 4.3 SDK.
