now after a few days, i think i rember having observed similar
things when running different grafics drivers on a not that
new european Linux distribution. but i didnt have time to
track it down by exchanging components like kernel or window
manager. the degradation i did see was at some 40%. 

which distribution and kernel do you have?

sorry i cant help in detail, but maybe its the Linux falvour
you are running that raises the problem.

maybe you do have the time and "magic" to isolate the root
cause a bit more.
