Yes Alasdair, this is a sad fact.. in a sense we were all children of the
Sun, and when OpenSolaris the project was killed, the community died with
it. The illumos Foundation and OpenIndiana looked like the afterlife
compared to OpenSolaris flesh and blood.

I know you had sincere motives and efforts right from the start but company
dynamics and personal preferences held sway and so the code fragmented.

Nexenta seemed to be on the right path right up to Nexenta Core Platform
3.1, then it killed the community it spawned and transitioned to illumian
then fizzled out. We should learn from this by condensing our efforts and
committing upstream to a universal master pool of code which shall serve as
a stream to all companies that benefit from the
OpenSolaris/illumos/OpenIndiana code and software ecosystem. Again the
community failed due to disjunct between the (changing) corporate goals and
individual code developers/contributors. It is interesting to know what
happened to code development in XstreamOS, DiLos, StormOS and osDyson, each
distro is doomed to a dead end if we don't pool our improvements together.

Even if i suffer the fate of OpenSolaris archivist i will try to extract
original code-dump from Oracle just after they put out the Sun, compare it
with the last working official LiveCD vis-a-vis the SchilliX and MartUX
live media, and collate all the improvement ever since. If the code
developers will not cooperate then we can clone their last committed code
and compare from there, we will treat them as separate branches, with the
goal of eventually merging most of them.

For this to succeed we will need the insight of at least Jörg Schilling, Martin
Bochnig and Peter Tribble who are active contributors to OpenSolaris code
and legacy then and now. They all have concluded that IPS is inherently
crippled and continued with SVR4 packaging system, considering that IPS has
inconsistent implementation in Sun and Oracle stewardships, we can keep it
for backwards compatibility and it can be left as RPM-DEB type of
preference, but SVR4 seems more adapted to distribution purposes.

I thank all the developers who have thus far kept the flame of OpenSolaris
alive, even if they were primarily serving their own preferences or the
company that employ(ed) them. We will need all the help and volunteer of
individuals from OpenIndiana and illumos, if the community is non-existent
then we will have to re-create it. More ego and corporate hubris
contributed to lack of goodwill, mutual distrust and code-decay. I am
reaching out my hand to bridge the enormous gap. We will bring OpenSolaris
code out of the fringe, as it is far more superior, we just have to hone
it, clean it.
I hope more hands will come..

I am holding out my hand.

Sincerely yours,

Seth Nimbosa, your Brother and Comrade-in-Arms
