Paul,

Because this issue has taken a lot of my time the past couple of days I've
thought a lot about it.

I'm taking a break from looking at it for the next day or two because I have
a replacement external drive enclosure on its way. Over the past 20+ years
I've used many external enclosures (for 3.5" and 2.5" drives), and have 5
others currently in intermittent use. None has displayed the device-flipping
behavior as does this used Azio enclosure. So starting with a fresh
enclosure, cable, and power supply is, in my opinion, a reasonable first
step.

Regarding the ssh and other issues: I had used the same master.conf and
default.confs on the old desktop for at least 6 years with the 500G drive in
an external enclosure. When I set it up it worked without fail running the
dirvish backup script from root's crontab at 00:30 every night. While the
new host is 64-bits and new hardware, the older host was 32-bits and new
hardware back then but the software worked.

I'll try new hardware when the enclosure arrives tomorrow and report the
results.

Regards,

Rich
