I found a nicer solution with some help from Stackoverflow: git config --global alias.format-patch-repo '!git format-patch --subject-prefix="PATCH $(basename $(git rev-parse --show-toplevel))"' This adds an alias that automatically adds the folder name of the repository. It can be used with git format-patch-repo HEAD^ If you only work in one directory, an alternative is to set the format.subjectPrefix option in the repository.
