JSON sounds like a swell idea.

I second this.
I don't know any tools for dlist, but json is supported in many languages
and there are cli-tools.
Importing the old format might be useful for migrating
old installations, or importing backups from old versions.
IMHO dumping in the old format is not needed.
There is less need to downgrade to an older version in the first place,
and even if an Admin needs the old dump format, it should be easy to convert
the json output to the old format.
