I'm done a simple test on my dev machine. svn up on the Maven layout takes ~2 minutes. svn up on /trunk takes 1-2 seconds. I remain concerned about the viability of this approach but I'm happy to keep applying patches if you are happy to continue. Regarding the move to git. Nothing is certain at this point.
