They can upgrade web.xml to Servlet 3.0 and add the session configuration. There is already enough code around session parsing for Servlet 3.0 that there was a deliberate decision for Tomcat 7 to remove some of the configuration options that were available in Tomcat 6. The aim was to reduce code and configuration complexity.
