A patch for the END/ERROR never being called has been submitted to both 6.0.x
and trunk. This should at least give you a chance to cleanup, 

your original problem of available()==0 but there yet being data, causing an
infinite loop is to me non reproducible.

I'll wait for your feedback before marking this fixed.
